Stepwells: Stairways to Water
The city of Patan, once the capital of Gujarat, is home to Rani Ki Vav, often described as one of the finest surviving stepwells. Queen Udayamati commissioned it late in the eleventh century, although sediment later buried it after a thirteenth-century flood. Restoration by the Archaeological Survey of India started in the 1960s, and the monument is now carefully preserved. The structure measures 65 metres by 20 metres and drops 27 metres below ground, with 500 sculptures set into its walls. Remarkably, this ancient monument survived the earthquake that struck in January 2001, when the tremor registered 7.6 on the Richter scale.
